NAISH 2010 SUP Championship series in Madison, WI
06.1.2010
Paddleboard Specialists is proud to be hosting the Naish Stand Up Paddling race series. Our local Madison races are part of a national series taking place in 22 U.S. cities. The top 3 men and women in each city will go head to head on September 27th in Lake Tahoe, CA. We hope to see racers from across the Midwest at this series. Paddlers from Milwaukee to Minneapolis and Chicago to Sheboygan are more than welcome to join us in our great paddling city of Madison.

Our leg of the series will take place at Madisonís Wingra Boats in Wingra Park (At the 2700 block of Monroe St. Turn south on Knickerbocker St and park in the lot one block down). The series is also part of our Paddle for the Polar Bears event. So bring the whole family down for a day on the water before the race begins.

The official Naish races will begin at 3pm on the dates listed below. We will go over complete rules before the races begin, but a there are few you should know ahead of time:

1. You must wear a coast guard approved pfd during the race. This is not only for your safety, but to keep you from getting ticketed by the local sheriff.

2. Your boards must be 12í6Ē or under to officially earn points in the series. If you have a longer board and would still like to paddle in the race, you are more than welcome, but again, no points for longer boards.

The formal race format is simple, each event awards points according to how you place in the race. Scoring is like golf. The lower the score the better. If you come in first you only get 1 point, second place 2 points, third 3 points, etc. In order to encourage participation at every race there will be points assigned to you if you miss a race. These points are based on the number of participants at the race you missed. If you miss a race you will be given the number of paddlers plus one. For example, if you miss a race that had 20 participants, you will be given 21 points to your series score. This makes it very beneficial for you to show up at every single race and should keep things fair for those who are committed to racing at every event.

At the end of the series the top three male and female competitors are invited to compete at the Naish national championships on September 27 in Lake Tahoe. If you compete at the Lake Tahoe event you have the chance to win a new Naish Glide and a trip to Maui for Naish Paddle Championship in July 2011.

Want to throw your hat in the Naish series, but donít have a board? No problem. Paddleboard Specialists will charter you a board, paddle and leash for only $15 per challenge date. 50% of the charter fee will be donated to the Henry Vilas zoo fund for buildling the new Polar Bear exhibit. (100% of your charter fees are applicable toward a paddleboard package purchase too!)

If you are new to Paddling or just starting out, our Paddle for the Polar Bears event will be a great way for you to prepare for the race. We will be giving lessons and instruction from 10:30a.m.-1:15p.m. We will be having some fun challenge events at 1:30 p.m. to help you get your sea legs and at 3 p.m. the Naish race will begin.
